Born
in Chicago in 1933, Howard Behrens is the master of the palette knife
technique. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a masters
degree in Fine Art in 1962. Instead of going to Johns Hopkins as planned, he
went to work for the Government Printing Office (GPO) as Chief Artist.
Upon leaving the GPO, he began painting full-time for a living. Howard
began his experimentation with the palette knife in 1976. In 1981, he
entered the art world with a one-man show. Today, Howard lives with
his wife Judy in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. They spend about half
the year traveling to places that he loves to paint. He captures the
color, light, and romance of sunlight. Recently, Howard visited France
to pay homage to Monet at Giverny. He created his own series of water
lilies, in his own style. Howard was an official artist for the Winter
Olympics 2002 in Salt Lake City, and his works were recently acquired by
several museums.
